Web Therapy

What is Telehealth Or Web Therapy?
Telehealth or web therapy involves the use of electronic communications to enable McCleary Psychological Services’ mental health professionals to connect with individuals using interactive video and audio communications.

Benefits of Teleheath
Telehealth offers some benefits as compared to traditional in-person psychotherapy. It can be convenient as online therapy can take less time away from your life and involves no time in traffic. Additionally, online communication is very comfortable for many people and for some it can seem more comfortable or easier than talking to someone in person, especially when revealing personal or private information. Lastly, telehealth can provide access to those who cannot travel to an office. Some people with chronic illnesses or disabilities may not be able to drive or easily able to leave their home.

Important Considerations Regarding Web Therapy
Despite the potential benefits, online therapy may not be the best option for everyone or every situation in need of professional support. Here are a few points to consider:

Research-Support
According to the American Psychological Association,  the expansion of telehealth would help address several hurdles to securing mental health services.

A 2008 meta-analysis of 92 studies, for example, found that the differences between Internet-based therapy and face-to-face were not statistically significant (Journal of Technology in Human Services, Vol. 26, No. 2). Similarly, a 2009 review of 148 peer-reviewed publications examining the use of videoconferencing to deliver patient interventions showed high patient satisfaction, moderate to high clinician satisfaction and positive clinical outcomes (Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice, Vol. 16, No. 3).

Location
In accordance to Virginia’s law, the practitioner must be licensed by both the regulatory board of the state where the patient is located and the state where the practitioner is located.

Confidentiality
McCleary Psychological Services utilizes a secure, HIPAA-compliant, encrypted audio/video transmission software to deliver telehealth. However, there are risks and consequences from telehealth, including, but not limited to, the possibility that, despite reasonable efforts on the part of the provider, the transmission of my personal information could be interrupted by unauthorized persons.
